What is a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)

If a child has a disability and can not receive reasonable benefit from regular education alone then they are entitled to receive a free appropriate public education with individualized support (special education). A child who qualifies for a special education is entitled to the educational and related services necessary in the least restrictive setting. These services are paid for by the local, state, and federal government through funding by the school and are “free” to the child and their parents. The appropriate services in the appropriate setting are based on the individual needs of the child to prepare the child for “further education, employment, and independent living”.
